River Root Farm is a certified organic vegetable and seed operation nestled into a hillside along the Upper Iowa River. The farm consists of almost 8 acres and is divided evenly between terraced fields and woods. Our actual area of production is less than two acres and cultivation is done by hand.  We use a system of mobile, unheated high tunnels to maximize our production capacity to a nearly year-round basis.  With our movable high tunnels, we are able to apply the benefits of season extension and crop protection to numerous crops throughout a calendar year.

We are currently building healthy soils by nourishing the living component of the soil and the microbial inhabitants that release, transform, and transfer nutrients. We are feeding soil biota and building soil organic matter with cover crops, compost, and biologically based soil amendments. Our methods will produce healthy plants that are better able to resist disease and insect predation, while also improving our soil structure. We believe the foundation for healthy food

 is healthy soil.
